On the first Wednesday of each month, a music recital is held in the Cathedral from 1 pm. The recitals give musicians an opportunity to perform in a unique acoustical space and to use the cathedral’s pipe-organ and grand piano. The audience is invited to come with lunch and sit and listen to some fine music while enjoying the ambience of the Cathedral building. A donation is requested.
Bell Tower History
Unfortunately, in the mid 1890s it was discovered that the foundations of the tower were becoming unstable because of the ringing of the bells. When the old Cathedral tower was demolished in 1970, the six bells went into storage in the expectation that a tower would be built one day from which the bells would be rung again. They have since been refurbished, three new bells were purchased all nine have been re-hung in the new tower which was completed at the end of April 2010.
On most Wednesdays evenings between 6.30pm-8.30pm you can sit in Kings Parade and listen to the bells, you are also invited to go in to the tower and watch while the rehearsals are taking place. Tours of the tower can be arranged bookings are essential.
