Stone and Measure – The Building of the Masonic Hall
April 21 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Few companies in Bathurst have left a lasting gift to the community, The Bathurst Masonic Hall Company is one that has. On Tuesday 20 November 1888, a meeting of shareholders of The Bathurst Masonic Hall Company Limited was held to discuss the purchase of land from Mr E. Webb. Located on Keppel Street opposite the residence of Dr Spencer, the purpose of the purchase was a Masonic Hall. With the purchase of the land, the builder was tendered, and the architect was commissioned. The construction of Bathurst Masonic Hall began in 1889. With crowds lining the streets and a procession on Tuesday, 2 July 1889, Governor Lord Carrington dedicated the keystone. Generations of Bathurstians have stories of their time spent at the Masonic Hall, however, what is the story of the Masonic Hall, the people who built the hall, the company, and the intriguing twists and turns of a court case? Come and learn more about this iconic building of Bathurst with Kim Bagot-Hiller. Complimentary glass of wine on arrival.
