Nigel Date: Guitars
Nigel started out practising music on Rob Shannon’s family farm in the central west of NSW. Right from the outset the driving inspiration was seeking out refining the art of improvising and spontaneous composition. This has seen Nigel go on to have a career performing with many of Australia’s best musicians. He has toured overseas, done countless recording sessions and appeared at many festivals. The music he has explored has crossed many genres, notably jazz, rock and many forms of acoustic styles from around the world.
Rob Shannon: Tabla, Percussion, Guitar
Born in Central West NSW, played extensively in The Woolshed with Nigel Date a musical friendship that has been going strong for nearly 40 years.
Rob draws a lot of ideas for improvising rhythmically from the period he sent in India in the 1990s studying Tabla (drums) under the guidance of Gladwin Charles of the New Delhi Gharana (family or lineage).
North Indian classical music draws heavily on improvisation in a very extended form and has rigid systems for both rhythm and melody. Melodically, Rob’s improvisation is styled on ragas, but is very heavily influenced by jazz and classical guitar and is now one of the great pleasures and artist endeavours in Rob’s musical life – treating the music as meditation as much as a way of expressing.
