Newbridge Winter Solstice Festival

Medieval jousting was the quintessential spectacle of chivalry, embodying bravery, honour, and martial prowess. Knights clad in armour charged on horseback, aiming to unseat their opponents with lances in hand. The thunderous clash of horse hooves and splintering wood filled the air as spectators cheered their champions.
Skill at arms displays showcased mastery of weaponry – from swordsmanship to archery – highlighting the combat skills essential for knighthood. Rossfechten, or horse fighting, added a thrilling dimension, where knights engaged in combat while mounted, demonstrating agility and control amidst the chaos of battle. Together, these traditions epitomized the valour of medieval knights.
At the Newbridge Winter Solstice Festival the renowned team from Tarago, Riding with Sticks, will showcase skill at arms (12noon) and jousting (3pm) on the Newbridge Showground. The festival itself opens at 11am, with markets until 4:30pm and the lighting of the wickerman bonfire at 5pm.
Preparations are also well under way for the fabulous mediaeval banquet to be held in the Brian Bennett Pavilion on Friday, June 21.
